I’m going on a flight in a few weeks, and want some good [though low budget!] headphones. I’m wondering what’s the difference between noise cancelling and noise isolation headphones? Would noise isolation headphones be just as good at disguising aircraft engine noise?

I want to buy some headphones for an upcoming 14 hour flight..which would be best to use on a plane to get rid of the annoying drone of the engine?
I’d also be very greatful of reccomended models/makes!

I heard noise cancelling needs batteries, major turn off? And which one do you recommend, is there any good brand that’s cheap?

Noise-isolating headphones simply passively block outside noises from reaching your ears by their mechanical construction. Sticking your fingers in your ears is a noise-isolating technique. Ear buds with a nice tight fit work similarly.
In contrast, noise-cancelling headphones use active electronics to “listen” to the noise around you and play and inverted signal through the headphones to cancel out the unwanted noise.
Most commercial “noise cancelling” headphones use a combination of both isolating and cancelling techniques. It turns out that noise cancellation works better at low frequencies and noise isolation works better at high frequencies. Using both together gives you good isolation across the whole frequency range.

I’m looking into buying some noise cancelling headphones. I own an ipod and LOVE listening to music. I’m going to Ireland soon and wish to sepearate myself from my crazy siblings on the airplane by using noise cancelling headphones. (and i mean ESCAPE…as in i close my eyes and hear just my music) I’m a struggling student and dont want to pay a ridiculous amount of money for these headphones. Bose looks great, but i’m not into spending that much. What is with the battery that most of them come with? Cant you just plug the h’phones into the ipod and listen? Whats the battery for? $65-70 ish dollars would be the ideal amount to spend. I could really use suggestions…brands, advise on battery, are they worth it….etc. Thank You!
