So what is the big deal with Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones?

Acoustic noise canceling technology has been around for a long time and I could go into a detailed explanation here but you really need an electronics degree to understand it fully. Here is the simplified version. Sound travels through the air as a wave, just like the waves that you see in water. If you take a wave (wave A) now use wave A to create wave B, wave B  has the same energy level as wave A but has been turned upside down so that it is the exact opposite of wave A. if we now add wave A and wave B together they cancel each other out. Hence, in our acoustic noise canceling headphones, the noise from your surroundings is wave A and the headphones generate wave B. that cancels out wave A.
